ABOUT ME

I’m a writer of fiction and nonfiction who lives in rural Northern California. In 2016 I exposed the financial shell game played by one of California’s largest skilled nursing providers that left local patients with substandard care. You can find that award-winning journalism here. A 2022 story which revisited this issue also won several local and state awards. In 2017 my cover story about the Hoopa Rodeo (link here) won first prize for sportswriting from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. Hey, that one surprised me! I’ve been writing about Humboldt County’s complicated relationship with our homeless residents for almost a decade. Some examples here, here, and here. In 2020 I transitioned to writing more fiction, and had a short story, “Rest. Stop.” picked up by the Saturday Evening Post. My short story “The Hidden Places” appeared in the May/June issue of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. That story was nominated for the 2022 Shamus Awards.

WHAT I’M DOING NOW

  • Busily editing a collection of essays like this one, for future self-publication. Also re-writing a novel (fourth draft) for future queries. It’s about the newspaper biz, trauma and other fun stuff.

  • My column, Hometown, is carried by the Ferndale Enterprise. Here’s a fan favorite. I write a lot about growing up country, getting citified then sinking your roots back in where you’re from. But mostly I write about joy.

  • My column about rural healthcare, 50 Miles from the Freeway, is carried on Redheaded Blackbelt and KMUD. Here’s a piece about the absolute cluster of dental healthcare. It’s a syndicated column, so if you’re interested in carrying it, use my contact page and get in touch!

  • I am also a contributor to KEET-TV, our local PBS station. Here’s one of my interviews. I’m a civics nerd who likes to get things done, and as such have launched a podcast with my creative collaborator James Faulk called What’s Wrong with Humboldt (And How to Fix It). You can find the first episode here. In 2022 I produced a documentary about suicide prevention and mental healthcare in Humboldt County as part of a grant awarded to KEET-TV from PBS Twin Cities. Here’s a link to that!
